Summer Programs

Announcements about summer programs arrive throughout the fall and into early spring although many programs have January - March application deadlines.

Announcements sent by the summer programs offices are posted on the Bulletin Board outside Room 110 Dedman Life Science Building.

IMPORTANT: Many summer programs require that multiple documents be submitted as part of the application.  Don't wait until the week before the application is due to begin the process. You may need to provide letters of recommendation and transcripts as well as an essay.

Baylor College of Dentistry Summer Pre-Dental Enrichment Program for College Students  Deadline: JANUARY 31, 2011

Camp John Marc  The camp serves young people who have chronic illnesses or physical disabilities.  There are one week volunteer opportunities as well as paid staff positions.

Children's Medical Center Short-Term Volunteer requires a commitment of 8 hours/week (minimum) for 3 to 6 months

CRSTI Student Research Intern  CRSTI is an acronym for The Cardiopulmonary Research Science & Technology Institute.  

Maguire and Irby Family Public Service Internship Program.  SMU students only.  The salary is $10/hour.  Please read each of the three sections on the website. 

Parkland Summer Volunteer You may sign up only on April 1st.  Applications go quickly.

Parkland Collegiate Fellows Program.  Review eligibility criteria (e.g., must be a resident of Dallas County or surrounding areas).  To obtain an application send an email to Ms. Felicia Fernandes Felicia.Fernandes@pphs.org and include your mailing address -- this is a postal address or a street address so that a paper copy of the application can be delivered to you.

Retina Foundation of the Southwest Internship.  Applications are by email. Deadline March 31, 2011.  If you have difficult accessing the linked flyer, please stop by the Pre-Med/Pre-Health Office, or check the Summer Programs Bulletin Board outside Room 110 DLSB.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Summer Administrative Internships.  Information for 2011 not posted as of 11/4/10 but the deadline for 2010 was March 31st.

QP-SURF at UT Southwestern for students preparing for a career in biomedical research. Applicants must be pursuing a major in computer science, physics, chemistry or mathematics and completed the sophomore year.

TEXAS

DeBakey Summer Surgery Program in Houston, Texas.  Housing not provided.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas.  PRE-VET students may also want to explore this website to find information on visiting and volunteering.

PURE Summer Program at UTHSC San Antonio.  PURE is an acronym for Physiology Undergraduate Research Experience. Deadline: March 4, 2011

SMDEP at UT Houston.  The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is administered through AAMC.  Check the SMDEP website for campus locations around the U.S. as well as for program information.

Summer Undergraduate Research Focus (SURF) at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.  $4,600 stipend with housing provided. Deadline: March 4, 2011

UTMB Health Hispanic Center of Excellence Medical Careers Diversity Program 5 week summer program:  May 23 - June 24, 2011.  Please see Dr. de Olivares for an application, Room 135 DLSB.

OUTSIDE TEXAS

Arizona Heart Foundation.  This program is for students with sophomore or higher standing (at the time of application).  Students should have excellent grades, demonstrated interest in cardiology and a solid record of positive extracurricular involvement. Deadline: March 2011 (date to be announced)

The Consortium for Optometry Summer Enrichment Programs:

Health Professions Advanced Summer Scholars (Health P.A.S.S.) Program at Des Moines University.  This summer program (July 10-20) is free.  It is "specifically geared toward students who are underrepresented in medicine and health care. 

Johns Hopkins University Summer Institute in Anatomy for Undergraduates. This course begins June 6th and continues through July 1st.  There is a non-refundable $50 application fee. Deadline: March 15,2011.

NIDDK Short-term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP)  NIDDK is an acronym for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Disease.  The program provides a short-term research experience at one of four undergraduate coordinating institutions.  $4,000 stipend.

Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine Summer Scholars Program for underrepresented, or educationally or economically disadvantaged students. Deadline: March 1, 2011.

Summer in Biomedical Science Undergraduate Research Program at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.  During this 8-week paid summer program, students work under the guidance of UAB faculty. Deadline: March 14, 2011.

The Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program for Premedical Students at the Weill Cornell Medical College.  This program is designed for premedical students.  It includes lectures, hospital rounds, and "how one pursues a specific research problem."

University of Michigan School of Dentistry Pipeline Program.  A six week program for college students with freshman or sophomore standing.  Self-identify as educationally, socially or economically disadvantaged or demonstrate a commitment to serve underserved populations.

University of Michigan School of Dentistry Profile for Success Program.  A seven week program for college junior, senior, recent graduate, or a person making a career transition.  Preparation for the DAT is the main focus.

University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine Summer VETS Program for both college and high school students.  Program participants spend time with four-year vet students, in the small animal hospital and special labs.  Students also spend a full day at New Bolton Center, the large animal facility. Deadline: April 1, 2011.

Washington University in St. Louis Summer Research Programs.  There are 3 programs:  BioMedRAP, CD-BioRAP, and AMGEN.

Weill Cornell/Rockefeer/Sloan-Kettering Gateways to The Laboratory Summer Program.  This a program for underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students who intend to pursue a career in research -- Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.  It is not an appropriate program for students who wish to pursue an M.D.
