Study Abroad

SMU-in-the South of France

Most French majors and minors spend a semester or year abroad with the SMU-in-Paris program, the SMU in the South-of-France (Cannes) program, or some other French program abroad. This is strongly recommended. It’s never too early to begin planning for study abroad – for example, by sketching out your entire four years of courses. This long-term planning is important for everyone, but especially for business majors.

The SMU summer program in Cannes is an all-French program. It is a five-week summer term designed for students who wish to combine their study of French with leisure in one of the most beautiful areas of France.

Beginning, intermediate or advanced students of French can earn six hours of academic credit in intensive language courses while enjoying extracurricular activities and tours of the southeastern part of France.

The courses, along with the excursions and activities, will be organized by Dr. Rita Winandy, Director of the SMU-in-the South of France program. The program has a strong academic emphasis. An important part of the program is a series of trips designed to give life and dimension to the study of French language and culture.

SMU-in-Paris: Paris, France

The SMU-in-Paris program was developed by Southern Methodist University in 1972 to offer its students a full French immersion experience in the center of Paris, one of the foremost capitals of Europe. The city has served as a cultural center for hundreds of years and attracts students from all over the world.

SMU students live with Parisian families and study in Reid Hall, a charming eighteenth-century building in the Montparnasse area and a center of artistic and literary life. All that has been said, written, sung and painted about Paris comes alive here as an integral aspect of the education.

Throughout the semester, students participate in required study excursions in order to engage in living French history. Both students and faculty visit sites and monuments presented in the courses. Past trips include Normandy and the South of France.

Program Leadership:

Dr. Isabelle Roynier, SMU-in-Paris Program Director, provides the leadership for the program and has taught French Civilization and Literature for SMU-in-Paris since 1987. Besides supervising and coordinating all program activities for both students and the native faculty, Dr. Roynier oversees all academic and curricular issues. Assistant Director Eric Waton attends to program logistics, such as student concerns, family placements and cultural activities.

Faculty Liaisons:

  • Dr. Heather Garrett-Pelletier, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Lecturer, heatherp@smu.edu
  • Paola Buckley, Department of Foreign Languages, Lecturer, pbuckley@smu.edu

For the fall semester applications should be submitted to the Education Abroad Office no later than March 1. For the spring semester, no later than October 1. Due to demand, students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. The program may reach capacity before the deadline. However, applications will be accepted after the deadline in the event that places are still available.
