ARBC 1401 Elementary Arabic I

This is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. Customs and cultural insights are also presented.

ARBC 1402 Elementary Arabic II

Prerequisite: Arabic 1401 or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
This course is continuation of ARBC 1401

ARBC 2301 Intermediate Arabic I

Prerequisite: Arabic 1402 or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
This course continues the speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and cultural studies begun in Arabic 1401 and Arabic 1402. Students are expected to acquire a substantial amount of vocabulary and be able to deal with idiomatic language and more advanced syntax.

ARBC 2302 Intermediate Arabic II

Prerequisite: Arabic 2301 or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
This course is continuation of ARBC 2301.

ARBC 3301 and ARBC 3302 Advanced Arabic I and II

Prerequisite: Arabic 2302 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
The objective of Advanced Arabic is to continue the students' development of the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing Modern Standard Arabic. These courses also aim at providing a thorough study of authentic materials in classical prose to create a foundation for the mastery of classical Arabic. The courses involve more extended readings and discussions of contemporary and historical cultural topics. In addition to a review of syntax and morphology, the courses intend to increase the range and accuracy of oral and written expression and aural comprehension. Classes are conducted entirely in Arabic.

ARBC 4312 Advanced Media Arabic

Advanced Media Arabic is designed to introduce authentic texts and audio files from a wide variety of media sources. It emphasizes the semantic and stylistic aspects of media Arabic rather than its grammar.
