The Chinese language has been spoken for thousands of years. Today over one billion people speak Chinese, making it the most widely spoken language in the world.

The Chinese program at SMU is an interdisciplinary concentration that offers students an opportunity to pursue interests in Chinese studies. The curriculum emphasizes language training and cultural introduction through works in history, literature, cinema, and gender studies.

Interested students are strongly advised to begin language work in their first or second year at SMU. This is especially true for students who hope to spend a summer or summer/fall in Beijing, China or a year in Taipei, Taiwan. The program aims to prepare students for professional careers and graduate study with three years of training in language and culture.
