Current Research

My research is focused primarily on the work of John Dewey. I also write often about the work of Jürgen Habermas. Other research interests include pragmatic accounts of science and scientific classification.

Representative Publications

  • (in press) Technological rationality in psychiatry: Critical theory, immanent critique and a pragmatist alternative. In J. Phillips (Ed.), Philosophical Perspectives on Technology and Psychiatry. Oxford: Oxford University Press.

  • "Discursive Democracy and a Democratic Way of Life" in Perspectives on Habermas. Open Court Press, November 2000.

  • "Habermas and Dewey on Democracy" The Southwest Philosophy Review, v.17, no.1 Jan. 2000.

  • with Peter Zachar, "Basic Emotions and Their Biological Substrates: A Nominalistic Interpretation" Consciousness and Emotion, v.2, no.2, Nov. 2001.

  • Two Invited Entries for the Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers. Thoemes Press, 2005. Johann Stallo, Active in the St.Louis Hegelians, Bronson Alcott, Transcendentalist and Educator.

Work in Progress

I'm currently working with Dr. Pete Zachar on a book concerning pragmatic accounts of scientific classification. Also, I'm commenting soon on a paper concerning eugenics.
