summa cum laude
Ph.D. student, Southern Methodist University
Joel Zapata was born and raised in the Texas Panhandle. Since then he has lived on the frontera and in Central Texas. He graduated with a B.A. in history and a minor in anthropology from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). At UTEP, he helped reestablish the university’s M.E.Ch.A chapter.
Joel has participated in various other university and community organizations and has extensive community service experience throughout Texas. The places he has lived and the other above mentioned experiences have greatly shaped Joel’s research interests, particularly the El Paso border that his own family crossed to reach what would become his rural hometown.
His research focuses on telling the stories of immigration, settlement, and community of Mexicana/os on the frontera and Tejas. Joel is especially interested in the labor and education of Mexican origin women and children.
