The Southwest has been a place of cultural flux in the history of the United States, and education has long been a stronghold of American cultural propagation and indoctrination. Thus, I'm interested in studying how education was conducted in these borderlands among the Chinese, a people considered foreign by those who considered themselves native. This study is important because it not only enlightens how hegemony projects itself, but also how it is received by those it seeks to incorporate or exclude.
