Pre-Professional Progams
Pre-Law - SMU pre-law students are in virtually all academic programs throughout the University. In a typical year, our 100 pre-law seniors include roughly 60% Dedman College majors, 25% from the Cox School of Business, 10% from Meadows School of the Arts, and 6% from the School of Engineering. Pre-MBA - Preparing for an MBA (Master's in Business Administration degree) does not mean you need to major in business as an undergraduate. In fact, a solid liberal arts background coupled with some finance-oriented business courses makes you very well-rounded and marketable.
Pre-Medical/Pre-Health - SMU students prepare for entry into a variety of health professions and programs. The majority of students apply to medical school, with students also following interests in dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, pharmacy, and podiatric medicine. Additionally, SMU has successful applicants to physician assistant and public health programs. The Pre-Med/Pre-Health program at SMU offers individual advising, peer networks and excellent preparation in the sciences, as well as opportunities for expanding one’s undergraduate education through classes in other areas of the University.
Pre-Ministerial - While students who wish to enter a seminary or pursue ministerial work after graduation can choose any major at SMU, the American Association of Theological Schools recommends a broad liberal arts program as the best preparation. Dedman College offers a wide spectrum of degree options to consider in preparation of ministerial work.
Pre-Physical Therapy (APT Program) - This program is intended to provide a direct path from the undergraduate degree at SMU to the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at University of Texas-Southwestern. APT students may major in any SMU undergraduate program. Specific courses are designated for APT; including biology, physics, calculus, chemistry, and psychology. The program includes summer internships.
Teacher Certification - This program, offered through the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education & Human Development, prepares teachers for grades Pre-K through 12.
