Before planning your first semester of college, consider doing the following:
Keep track of your questions and plans so you can discuss them with your advisor:
- Identify interesting courses and bring them with you when meeting your advisor.
- Use What's my First Course to see which classes lead into your potential major. You will be able take these classes during your first three semesters.
- Read about potential majors in the SMU Catalog: Look at required classes and GPA requirements for admission to the major. Look at course descriptions to see if they are the types that appeal to you.
- Consider your most probable course placement in Math, English, and Foreign Language, as well as any other relevant subjects, by counting Dual/Concurrent Credit, AP and /or IB scores. Are you going to take placement tests?
- Plan to take College writing and Math unless you already have credit for them.
- Do not plan your fall schedule! Do not worry about knowing everything in advance. Come to advising appointments prepared to discuss potential directions and classes.
