| SMU Data Mining Teams Wins Big in Vegas!EconomicsFor a second consecutive year, SMU captured the first place prize in the 2009 Data Mining Shootout, a national competition. Winners were announced in Las Vegas on Oct. 27 and congratulations go to team members Mike Fulmer, Jingjing Ye, and Steven Gregory, along with their leader Tom Fomby, Chair of the Economics Department at Dedman College, and former student and PhD graduate Indro Dasgupta, who served as consultant.

| Italy honors Dean Jim Quick Dean James E. Quick, professor in the SMU Roy M. Huffington Department of Earth Sciences, will be awarded the Capellini Medal by the Italian Geological Society, in recognition of discovery of a unique fossil supervolcano in northern Italy’s Sesia Valley. The Capellini Medal is awarded to foreign geoscientists for significant contributions to Italian geology and Quick will be the second recipient of the award.

| Regional Science & Engineering Fair Looking for Judge Volunteers SMU is looking for volunteer judges for the 2011 Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science & Engineering Fair, an annual event which Dedman College Science departments have coordinated for many years. It is a good opportunity to interact with the best science students in the Metroplex. Students who have already won their school fairs, will be assessed by judges in the preliminary rounds, reducing the number to just a few Grand-Prize finalists. | Dean Tsutsui experienced earthquake in Japan while traveling with the Japanese American Leadership DelegationWilliam Tsutsui, Dean of Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, was named as one of 13 Japanese American leaders from across the nation to join the 2011 Japanese American Leadership Delegation (JALD). The delegation was in Japan to meet and exchange information with the highest level of Japanese leaders in the government, business, and cultural sectors when the earthquake and tsunami hit.
