The Rise of American Predominance and the Passing of the European Age

How can we understand Europe's abrupt loss of world-wide ascendency to the United States in the first half of the twentieth century? To address this remarkable shift, these lectures will examine the rapidly changing global power balances between the American Civil War and World War I. They will focus on three overriding themes: the impact of the modern nation state, socio-economic reverberations of industrialization, and the intellectual-cultural responses to the resulting disquietude in human relationships.

Godzilla and Japanese Culture

Since Godzilla's first appearance more than fifty years ago, the King of the Monsters has become a cinematic icon and a globally recognized symbol of Japan.  But what can a giant, fire-breathing movie monster tell us about Japanese culture and Japan's national experience since World War II?  What is it about an actor in a rubber lizard suit destroying miniature Japanese cities that has inspired love, loyalty, and laughter over generations of fans?  This talk, lighthearted but rooted in current scholarship, will explore the serious lessons to be learned from the twenty-eight Godzilla films and the abiding worldwide popularity of the King of the Monsters.

SMU's Common Reading: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Approaching its 8th year, the Common Reading Program is now an established tradition at SMU, creating a common thread amongst all incoming, first-year students. The common reading is selected each year bu the Common Reading Selection and Implementation Committee and then distributed to incoming students during orientation. Faculty members weave the book into their teaching, assignments, and discussions throughout the year. Godbey participants can now become pary of that common thread by participating in the Common Reading Program. Participants are encouraged to read the book and attend a lecture/discussion led by SMU faculty.

The common reading for the class of 2015 is "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot.
