Jeffrey Allen is a clinical professor of finance, post-tenure, at the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Cox School of Business in Dallas, TX.  He received a doctoral degree in finance and econometrics from Purdue University, where he was awarded the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business National Doctoral Fellowship.  He is a past recipient of the "Research Excellence Award" at the Cox School along with teaching awards that include the "Executive MBA Most Valuable Professor Award".  He has also received awards for service to non-profit groups and other community organizations.

Dr. Allen is senior vice president (SVP) and chief financial officer (CFO) of Navigator Energy Services, a crude oil pipeline company based in Dallas.  He was formerly a co-founder and CFO of JP Energy Partners (JPE), a midstream master limited partnership (MLP) listed on the NYSE.  His team at JPE completed several successful acquisitions prior to his departure in 2012.  He was also SVP and CFO of LONESTAR Midstream Partners LP, a natural gas pipeline MLP sold to PVR Partners in 2008.  He has been a financial consultant to several energy companies in the US and abroad over the past 18 years.  Prior to his doctoral studies, he was a senior financial analyst with Hewlett-Packard Company.

Dr. Allen resigned from the tenured faculty in 2008 to assume his current appointment where he teaches Applied Corporate Finance in the Executive MBA program.  He was previously a faculty member at the Darden Business School, University of Virginia, and has taught finance, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and valuation to hundreds of audiences.  He is the author of a forthcoming book titled Essentials of Financial Practice, targeted towards business executives, financial analysts, and M&A practitioners.

Dr. Allen’s research and practicing interests include the valuation and structure of M&A transactions, energy master limited partnerships, private equity investments, and corporate financial policies.  He has published articles in top journals in finance including Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Business, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
