Services for Persons with Disabilities

Fondren Library is committed to providing resources for students with disabilities and in creating open dialogue in order to better serve all users and increase access to low-distraction study spaces, assistive software, and to any other Fondren Library resources not listed here.

Upon entering through either the Fondren Main Desk entrances, there is a map that details main points of interest in Fondren (study room locations, restrooms, elevators, stairs, call numbers) on each floor. Additionally, the map is color coded to denote the three sections of the Fondren Library (red, blue, and gray) for easier navigation.

We have compiled a list of low-distraction study spaces (group and individual) available in Fondren Library. If you need any assistance in accessing these spaces or in tailoring these rooms to better suit your needs, please contact the Main Desk at Fondren at 214-768-2329. These spaces are available to reserve up to two weeks in advance.

Entrances

There are five entrances to Fondren Library on the first floor; two entrances (Fondren Main Desk entrances) are handicap accessible and have automatic doors. The other three entrances are all in Fondren Gray—there’s an entrance from the Laura Bush Promenade into the Collaborative Commons, an entrance facing Dallas Lawn, and an entrance from the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

Elevators

There are three elevators on the first floor of Fondren Library—Red Elevator to access Red 2, 3, and 4, Blue Elevator to access the Mezzanine and Blue 2, and Gray Elevator to access Gray 2 and 3.

Software & Technology

Each computer in Fondren is equipped to access Kurzweil’s Firefly. Kurzweil can read any digital text aloud, including the internet, translate texts into any Google-supported language, and also includes organizational tools (text highlighter, talking spell checker, note-taking capabilities, and a dictionary) in one platform.

There are three computers in the Fondren Library Learning Commons with access to Zoom Text, JAWS, and Dragon Naturally Speaking. Please see any staff member at the Fondren Main Desk to access these computers.

SMU students interested in using Kurzweil can contact any Fondren Library staff for assistance in creating an account in-person or via the Ask a Librarian feature on the SMU Central University Libraries page (www.smu.edu/cul)

Fondren Library also has a braille embosser to print text into tactile braille cells for SMU students. Please contact any Fondren Library staff or faculty member for more information.
