Know what to do: Evacuate

Although people typically think of evacuating a building because of a fire, there are other reasons why you may need to evacuate a building:

  • A hazardous chemical spill within a building
  • A volatile gas release within a building
  • The potential for violence due to an intruder or shooter
BEFORE AN EMERGENCY
  • Know where the nearest emergency exists are in any building that you live in or visit frequently
  • Try using an emergency exit before an emergency
  • Remember to look for exits when you go out to restaurants, malls, clubs, or theaters

WHEN EVACUATING A BUILDING DURING AN EMERGENCY

If you are on the second floor or above:
  • Do not use elevators
  • Go to the nearest, safe staircase

Help others as you evacuate

When you have exited the building:
  • Tell first responders if you know of anyone still in the building who may need assistance to evacuate
  • Gather with the others who have left the building, so officials will know whether everyone has safely evacuated
