Security Awareness 2012

Security Awareness 2012

Did you know… during the month of September 2012, seven individuals handed over their SMU Credentials, falling prey to a phishing attempt.  Those seven compromised accounts generated 376,225 phishing emails to other individuals!  Don’t fall victim to a phishing attempt… SMU will never ask for your password or other personal information in an email. As the number of phishing messages continues to grow, unfortunately so does the number of SMU individuals who fall victim to these attempts.  We will focus on how to better determine if a message is legitimate and what to do if you are in doubt!

Welcome to Security Awareness Month!

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. We have a number of initiatives underway to help raise awareness across campus of the various threats and security best practices. We invite each of you to take a few moments this month to increase your knowledge of security threats and best practices to increase the protection of our data!

You will receive weekly email messages this month with information about various security threats including Phishing, Spam, Internet Security, Social Networking security and others.  These brief messages will provide practical tips to protect your information.

Online Training (Available for Faculty and Staff only)

Last year we challenged faculty and staff to participate in an online training program.  We had a great response and are hoping to increase the number this year!  We've selected a few new videos and have posted all of the content within Blackboard to simplify the process.  There are 28 videos to complete which requires about 1 hour and 30 minutes. However, you do not have to complete them all in one sitting.  Next to each video is the length of time it will take to complete. Most are just a few minutes long.  So you can take a few minutes a day throughout the month to complete the training.

To complete the training:

1.    Visit https://courses.smu.edu

2.    Login with your SMU ID and password

3.    Locate the Security Awareness 2012 course in the My Courses section

4.    Click on the tutorial you wish to preview.  Blackboard will remember which ones you have completed and which still remain.

5.   Complete the 3 question quiz at the end of each tutorial

Employees who complete the tutorials and quizzes with a 70% or better average will receive an email at the end of the month indicating a successful completion of the program.  The program completion will also be uploaded to your training history in Access.SMU.  Employees will also be entered into a raffle to win one of several great prizes including a Kindle Fire.

Please help us protect our University information and participate in this important training initiative.
