Fall Edition

Residence Hall Wireless Improvements

Over the past few years, OIT has worked diligently to upgrade data network infrastructure in the Residence Halls and throughout campus in order to improve the network experience for the residents. This included displacing antiquated network equipment, increasing Internet capacity, and high performance wireless controllers (the devices that interfaces with the Access Points). We modified the configuration settings to only allow a specific protocol which will improve overall performance as well. In just a few short days at the start of the fall semester, we saw a record number of devices connect to the wireless network. With the increase in unique wireless devices students are bringing to campus, we must now also increase the density of access points within the residence halls to meet the demand.

During the week of September 4, McElvaney Hall wireless density was increase by adding 45 additional access points We then surveyed the students in McElvaney and the results were overwhelmingly positive! The new high density design as well as the increased capacity for wireless connections, made a significant difference in their experience of PerunaNet in the Residence Hall.

During the weeks of September 23 - October 3, we completed the same type of work in Moore Hall. Again, we've seen positive results from those efforts.

We have compiled a schedule to overhaul the wireless network in the remaining Residence Hall buildings. This work includes an extensive amount of new cabling in each building as well as 400 additional access points. Rather than installing these devices in the hallways as in the past, we are moving the devices into the ceilings of the rooms since the newer wireless technology is much more sensitive to interference. Unfortunately, this maintenance does present an interruption to the residents as the technicians need access to the rooms for the installation. We are working closely with RLSH to schedule the work and ensure that the residents are informed of maintenance activities.
