SMU PPP to be Discontinued on January 3, 2012
OIT has provided free dial-up internet service called SMU PPP for many years. This technology has become out of date as high speed internet has become affordable and widely available. OIT has been monitoring the usage on SMU PPP for several months. At this time, very few individuals are using this service. Therefore, SMU PPP will be discontinued on January 3, 2012
OIT Projects—What’s Happening in OIT?
Each year, OIT completes a large number of projects ranging from smaller upgrades to larger implementations. Typically, the larger projects are communicated to campus while the smaller ones are communicated to a smaller audience. In order to better represent the work that OIT is conducting to support the University, a portion of our project portfolio has been published for faculty and staff.
Our project portfolio currently consists of over 400 project requests. Several of these are internally driven to better streamline services, enhance our operational efforts, or improve business processes. Others are customer requests for service upgrades, enhancements, or new implementations. We’ve decided to show a number of the projects that have external impact and visibility. The projects listed are only a small sampling of the projects currently underway. Over the next few months, we will move towards exposing more and more of the current projects on this site.

Holiday Online Shopping Safety Reminders
The month of December is always a busy time--- especially for viruses and spam! Remember to be on alert this month as viruses and phishing attempts typically triple.

- Be very careful about clicking links in emails for online cards, advertisements etc.
- Do not respond to emails asking you to verify your information--especially any banking or credit card accounts
- Shop only reputable websites. When checking out, verify that the site is secure (look for https: at the beginning of the URL and the Lock icon
in your browser)
- When registering on shopping websites, use a secure password but don't use the same password that you use for SMU or for your bank accounts!
- Double check your computer to ensure that it is up to date with the latest software updates.

Technology Training Series
The Technology Training Series will continue on January 19. Our first training for the Spring Semester will be Outlook Productivity. For this session, we’re excited to partner with Human Resources to review the principles taught in the Focus class combined with practical instruction on the top items you need to know in Microsoft Outlook to keep your e-mail box from becoming unruly. As you focus on getting your projects for 2012 off the ground, consider carving out the time to learn some practical and time saving tools.
Our series on March 8th will be Adobe Acrobat X: Electronic Homework Assessment and ePortfolio Building. The Technology Training series will conclude on April 17th with Lisa Wall (CUL) and Brad Boeke (OIT) showcasing the latest online digital media collections available at SMU and how best to use them in your classes.
All classes will be held at noon at the Hughes Trigg Forum. Mark your calendars for these upcoming dates and stay tuned for registration information that will be sent campus-wide in the next several weeks.
