Inside.smu.edu, powered by Microsoft SharePoint 2010, is a flexible and powerful web based service designed to assist in team collaboration. This service allows you to easily design websites to fit your specific requirements, including calendars, document workspaces, lists, discussion boards, wiki, blog and reporting tools, to name a few! You can create sites that will allow you to work with specific people across departments. Powerful integration with the new Office 2010 and Office 2011 for Mac has the ability to completely transform the way we create and manage our documentation and ideas.
Requesting a Site
We are currently piloting student use of Inside.SMU with several academic graduate programs. Based on their feedback throughout the Fall and Spring semester, we will develop the service to be offered to all students during the summer. What is Inside.SMU?
Inside.SMU is the branded name for SMU's Microsoft SharePoint product. Microsoft SharePoint is a web application for collaboration and is comprised of sites, content, and search.
What version of Microsoft SharePoint runs Inside.SMU?
SMU has deployed SharePoint 2010. Microsoft is currently releasing SharePoint 2013, which will undergo a thorough evaluation by the Office of Information Technology. An upgrade schedule will be released subsequent to the evaluation.
What do I get from using Inside.SMU?
You and your student team are entitled to a site that allows you to store documents, maintain a group calendar, create a task list, or have a discussion.
Who can get an Inside.SMU Site?
We are offering a pilot of Inside.SMU to certain graduate programs for the fall of 2012 with plans to expand to other graduate programs in the spring of 2013. OIT intends to provide sites for the remainder of students in summer of 2013.
OIT is currently offering Inside.SMU for student study groups, though there will be long term plans for student organizations and other groups.
Do I get a Personal Site?
Personal Sites will be offered for Summer of 2013. Team sites are the focus at this point.
What is the Quota?
The team site has a quota of 1GB.
Is this in the Cloud?
Inside.SMU runs on SMU owned servers in the SMU Data Center, and is not considered a cloud service. Some would call it a Private Cloud service since it is exclusive to SMU.
Does this replace Blackboard?
Blackboard is a Learning Management System with many features dedicated to an entire course. Inside.SMU is best used as a collaborative system for student projects, research, and documentation.
Am I required to use Inside.SMU?
No.
How does this compare to Google Docs?Microsoft SharePoint and Google Docs share many similarities. The main difference is that Microsoft SharePoint is designed to interact with Microsoft Office Documents.
