PGP

About PGP

PGP Whole Disk Encryption software is used to secure all SMU laptop computers. PGP provides full disk encryption protecting the data stored on the computer when the computer is powered off. Once the computer is turned on, a password must be provided in order to launch the operating system and access the files. Once the PGP password is provided, all data is "unlocked" and available to the authenticated user.

PGP Passwords

In the event that you forget your PGP password, please contact the OIT Help Desk. The Help Desk can provide a one time use Token to login to the computer. Once logged in, you will need to reset your PGP passphrase. The Help Desk will assist you with this process.

Additional Features

PGP can also be installed on USB flash drives as well. However, the computer on which the USB drive is inserted must have PGP installed in order to unlock the files.

Installing PGP

To request PGP on an SMU managed laptop, please contact the OIT Help Desk. Only authorized individuals are allowed to download the PGP client.
