Computer Orders

All SMU managed computers must be ordered through OIT. OIT maintains a limited inventory of the standard PC desktops and monitors. If a department wishes to order a laptop, Macintosh or non- standard configuration, those orders must be placed through OIT. Once the computer is received, OIT will configure the machine with the standard software load.

To order a standard PC or monitor, login to the Online Support Center.

All computers must meet the following specifications:

  • Windows computers must be Business Class models with Microsoft Windows 7 Professional or Enterprise installed.  No home editions of Windows will be supported.
  • Windows Laptop computers must contain a TPM Chip (Trusted Platform Module) which is used for encryption
  • windows computers will have a minimum of 4 GB memory
  • All Macintosh computers currently for sale from Apple, meet SMU specifications

Computer Standards

Option 1 Desktop – Small Form Factor  
Processor-Intel Core  I7-2600 processor, RAM: 8 GB, Hard Drive: 250 GB , Video: Integrated Intel Graphics, Optical Drive- Super Multi LS DVD/CD RW,Warranty: 3 Year labor/ parts 

Option 2 Desktop Small Form Factor
Processor-Intel Core  I3-2100 processor, RAM: 4 GB , Hard Drive: 250 GB, Video: Integrated Intel Graphics , Optical Drive-Super Multi LS DVD/CD RW, Warranty: 3 Year labor/parts 

Monitors:
19” Model
22” Widescreen Model

An additional $10 charge will be assessed for an adapter when installing a second monitor on a desktop system.

Standard Load

The following applications are installed by default for any OIT managed computers:

Mac:

Mac OS 10.8, Microsoft Office 2011, McAfee antivirus software, LANDesk (inventory),Adobe Acrobat Reader

Windows:

Windows 7 Enterprise, Microsoft Office 2010, Forefront (Antivirus and Antispyware), LANDesk (inventory), Adobe Acrobat Reader

Computer Repair

OIT provides full repair service for all HP,Dell, and Apple computers. To request a repair, please contact the OIT Help Desk.

Computer Disposal

OIT recycles SMU owned computers and monitors. All hard drives are completely erased prior to packaging the equipment for disposal. The recycling program includes all computers, monitors, keyboards, printers etc. To dispose of SMU equipment, please contact the OIT Help Desk.

For recycling of personal equipment, you may deliver the equipment directly to HOBI’s Dallas Facility located at 7610 Ambassador Row, Dallas, TX 75247. There is no charge as long as there are less than 10 units and you have an SMU ID.
