What is DHCP?
Rather than requesting an IP address from OIT and configuring the computer manually with that IP address, the devices can simply plug into the wired network and obtain an IP address automatically. This eliminates a portion of IP management as well as the configuration process for the device. For additional information, click here.
What impact will this have on my office computer?
During the implementation process, several steps will be done by OIT remotely. The computer will need to be powered on during the process. The computer itself will lose connectivity to the network for approximately 5 minutes. Once the computer is back online, the device will either have full access or will be sent to the registration page. The registration process requires only your username and password and takes about 30 seconds. Once that is complete, full access is restored.
When printers are reconfigured, any computers printing to those devices will need to reinstall the printers using a different method. Instructions are posted here.
If you use remote desktop to access your computer, your IP address will change. We recommend using the new hostname for RDP access rather than the IP address in case the IP address changes. In most cases, the newly assigned IP address will remain constant.
If your computer was granted special access to various servers or services, this access will need to be updated. OIT will make every effort to capture these in our planning stages. If you do not have access to a resource following the network change, simply contact the Help Desk and we'll ensure that it is resolved.
