Hiring Adjuncts, Students, and Temporaries

Adjunct Faculty
Adjunct Faculty teach on a part-time basis, typically employed by the semester or by the academic year to teach up to one-half load.  Adjunct faculty are not eligible for University benefits.

The department must:

  • Provide the Adjunct Faculty New Hire packet
  • Ensure that the new adjunct faculty visits the Department of Human Resources to complete a Form I-9 before he or she begins working
  • Complete a Payroll Authorization Form for the adjunct faculty and attach their W-4 and Direct Deposit.

Temporary Staff
Temporary staff work in a non-teaching capacity, supporting administrative areas, programs, and schools, for a period of one year or less. Similar to regular staff, they may work on a part-time or full-time basis. Temporary staff are not eligible for University benefits.

The department must:

  • Provide the Temporary Staff New Hire Packet
  • Ensure that the temporary employee visits the Department of Human Resources to complete a Form I-9 before he or she begins working
  • Complete a Payroll Authorization Form for the temporary employee and attach their W-4 and Direct Deposit

Student Workers
Students who work on campus are considered employees of the University and are paid through SMU Payroll. Student employees are not eligible for University benefits. For further information about student employment opportunities, visit the Student Employment Office

The department must:

  • Provide the Student Employee New Hire Packet
  • Ensure that the student employee visits the Department of Human Resources to complete a Form I-9 before he or she begins working
  • Complete a Payroll Authorization Form for the student employee and attach their W-4 and Direct Deposit

International Student Workers
International student employees have been issued student visas to be full-time students in the U.S. They have specific requirements under which they can work. For further information, visit the International Center FAQs

The department must:

  • Provide an On-Campus Work-Eligibility Form and On Campus Employment Checklist for International Student Workers
  • Complete a Payroll Authorization Form 
  • Ensure that the international student worker visits the International Center to obtain approval on the On-Campus Work Eligibility Form before he or she begins working
  • Ensure that the international student worker visits the Department of Human Resources to complete a Form I-9 before he or she begins working
