Campus Parking Permits

About Parking Permits

General Information regarding SMU Parking Permits. See below for specific information about types of permits. 

  • A current parking permit must be properly displayed at all times when on campus otherwise your vehicle is at risk of being in violation.
  • SMU students can purchase parking permits online through My Parking Account.
  • Students click here for all current parking fees.
  • SMU benefits eligible employees will need to visit our office to complete a payroll deduction form and register their vehicle. Permits are auto renewed each year in early June unless the permit is returned and a stop deduction form completed.  
  • SMU Temporary and Sponsored employees can purchase parking permits online on My Parking Account or at the Parking and ID Card Services Office. 
  • Temporary parking permits are available for visitors and guests at the Parking and ID Card Services Office between 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. M-F or online by creating a guest account.
  • Having purchased a permit does not imply that parking is allowed without displaying the permit. The permit must be displayed at all times on campus. 
  • Notes do not function as a permit and parking staff will not recognize notes inside or affixed to a parking vehicle. Contact the office if you have questions or need guidance.
  • Permits not from the parking office will be cited.
  • Permits tampered with or altered will be booted. 

Ordering Parking Permits

  • To order a parking permit and register your vehicle, visit My Parking Account.
  • Print the Temporary Permit and display on the dashboard of your vehicle.  Your temporary permit for up to 10 days from the order date.  The temporary permit is valid in the red All University Permit (AUP) areas indicated on the campus parking map.
  • Permit fees will be charged to your my.SMU.edu account and are not paid on My Parking Account 
  • Permit fees are based on the total number of credit hours of enrollment.
  • To receive your permit by mail before classes start, orders must be placed before the last week of July for Fall permits and by the last Friday of December before winter break for a Spring permits. Orders placed after that can not be guaranteed for delivery before classes start.  

Opt-out of a Parking Permit

  • To "opt-out" of a parking permit, you need to log on to your parking account as though you're ordering a parking permit.
  • Select "Order Permit" when you get to the permit selection screen. You will need to select the "opt-out" of permit option on the bottom of the list of permit options.
  • You must agree to the parking rules for the University and then complete the process just as you would if you were ordering a permit.
  • The very last screen is the "order receipt" page. We recommend that you print and save this page for your records.

Permit Placement

  • Parking permits must be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the windshield on the passenger side of the vehicle. The permit must have the expiration date and the bar code clearly visible so it can be scanned
  • Permits are can be peeled off and re-positioned on a different vehicle in the event that alternate vehicles are to be parked on campus. Permits cannot be used by a different driver. 

 

 

Student Permits

Student permits are purchased online and mailed using the attached link. Students must be registered for classes for more than 24 hours before logging in to order. Permit fees post to student accounts 24 to 48 hours after the permit is ordered and fees are paid on my.SMU.edu Student permits fees information is available on the Bursar's website how to make a payment 

Resident Permit

Resident Permits may park in Resident areas and in any All University Permit (AUP) parking areas.

Permits are valid for the academic year and expire August 1st 

Proof of campus residency is required to order a resident permit.
Resident parking areas are marked yellow on the Student Parking Map to match the yellow color code bar on the bottom of the permit. 
Resident permits are not valid in Meadows Museum Garage, Level 1 or 2 of Binkley Garage or Faculty/Staff areas.
Students must show resident status to be eligible for Resident parking.
Avoid parking in the following areas: visitor parking, metered parking and the Law Garage

Non-Campus Resident Permits

Non-Resident Permits

Commuter/Student permits may park in any All University Permit (AUP) parking areas.

Permits are valid for the academic year and expire August 1st 

Commuter/Student parking areas are marked red on the Student Parking Map to match the red color code bar on the bottom of the permit..
Commuter/Student parking permits are not valid past midnight in Meadows Museum Garage, Resident or Faculty/Staff areas.
Avoid parking in the following areas: visitor parking, metered parking and the Law Garage.
If your vehicle is in the shop or you will drive a different vehicle be sure to place the permit on the vehicle you will bring. Failure to do so could result in citation. 

 
Fall Only Non-Resident
 
 

Fall Only Non-Resident Permits

Commuter/Student permits may park in any All University Permit (AUP) parking areas.

The permit is valid until December 31st and is intended for students graduating in December or studying aboard in the Spring Semester

Commuter/Student parking areas are marked red on the Student Parking Map. See gray color code bar on the bottom of the permit to indicate Fall AUP
Commuter/Student parking permits are not valid past midnight in Meadows Museum Garage, Resident or Faculty/Staff areas.
Avoid parking in the following areas: visitor parking, metered parking and the Law Garage.
If your vehicle is in the shop or you will drive a different vehicle be sure to place the permit on the vehicle you will bring. Failure to do so could result in citation. 

  

 Law School Permits

Law School Permits may park in the Law Garage and in any All University Permit (AUP) area

 Permits are valid for the academic year and expire August 1st 

Numbering starts with the expiration year "17" followed by "N" for Daniel Parking Center and the unique number 

The Daniel Parking Center is marked green on the Student Parking Map to match the green color code bar on permit at the bottom.
Law permits are also valid in any All University Parking (AUP) parking areas marked red on the Student Parking Map.
Commuter/Student Parking Permits are not valid past midnight in Meadows Museum Garage or Faculty/Staff areas.
Avoid parking in the following areas:  resident, visitor parking, metered parking.
If your vehicle is in the shop or you bring a different vehicle, be sure to place the permit on the vehicle you will bring to campus. Failure to so could result in citation.

 Faculty and Staff Permits

General Faculty Staff Permits 

Faculty/Staff Permits may park in Faculty/Staff (F/S) areas that are not assigned by letter or AUP

Permits are valid for the academic year and expire August 1st,

Numbering starts with the expiration year "17" followed by "E" for employee and the unique number  

General Faculty/Staff parking areas are indicated by signage posted at the entrances of each gated lot or within a parking garage.
Faculty/Staff Permits are also valid for parking in any All University Permit (AUP) parking areas on the campus map indicated in red above the permit number and bar code.
Avoid parking in the following areas:  visitor parking, metered parking and student resident parking.
If your vehicle is in the shop or you are using a different vehicle please place your permit on the vehicle you will be using. Failure to do so could result in citation.  

 

 M Lot Assignment Permit

 

 Assigned Faculty Staff Permits

 Assigned Faculty/Staff Permits may park in the parking area that corresponds with the letter on the parking permit

Permits are valid for the academic year and expire August 1st 

Numbering starts with the expiration year "17" followed by "E" for employee, followed by the assignment lot letter "M" and the unique number 

Only employees who have been assigned to park in these lots may receive the corresponding permit with matching letter and blue color code bar. 

Assigned lots are reserved and subject to a waiting list. Eligible employees interested in assigned lot parking can sign up at My Parking Account.
 

 

           

 Adjunct Faculty Permits

Faculty Permits may park in general Faculty/Staff (F/S) areas and AUP that are not assigned by letter

Adjunct permits are by purchased the semester and expire at the end of each semester.

Numbering starts with the expiration year "17" followed by "ADJ for adjunctand the unique number 

General Faculty/Staff parking areas are indicated by signage posted at the entrances of each lot or within a parking garage.
Faculty/Staff Permits are also valid for parking in any All University Permit (AUP) parking areas.
Avoid parking in the following areas:  visitor parking, metered parking and student resident parking.
If your vehicle is in the shop or you are using a different vehicle please place your permit on the vehicle you will be using. Failure to do so could result in citation.

Other Types of Permits

SMU AUP Permit

General Parking Permits 

Individuals who are not current students or direct employees of the University have options to purchase: an annual, monthly or daily permit online at www.smu.edu/parkingservices or in our office. 

Permit expire based on the purchase date and duration. The expiration date will be visible on the permit. 

• General parking areas are indicated by signage posted at the entrances of each lot or within a parking garage.
• AUP Permits are valid for parking in any All University Permit (AUP) parking areas identified in red on the campus map and with a red dot on parking sign or with AUP indicated. .
• Avoid parking in the following areas: visitor parking, metered parking and student resident parking.
• If your vehicle is in the shop or you are using a different vehicle please transfer your permit to the vehicle you will be using. Failure to do so could result in citation. 

 

Temporary Parking Permits

  • Temporary Parking Permits for may be purchased from the Parking and ID Card Services Office between 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., M-F.
  • Temporary Parking Permits are $5.00/day and must be properly displayed when parking on campus on the rear view mirror with information visible.
  • Temporary Parking Permits are valid in any All University Permit (AUP) parking areas marked in red on the SMU Parking Maps.
  • Gated areas (Airline, Binkley, Moody and Mustang Parking Centers ) require a code for entry which are issued by the Parking and ID Card Services Office upon receipt of permit for non-student or employee temporary permits. 
  • Students and employees must swipe their SMU ID card for entry or exit at these locations. 

Loading/Unloading Permits

  • Temporary Parking Permits serve as loading/unloading permits that will allow you to park closer to the building where you need to load or unload items for a short period of time. These permits are only available at the Parking and ID Card Services Office
  • Once the vehicle is loaded/unloaded, the vehicle should be parked in a regular space and not remain in the loading area. 
  • Please avoid parking in fire lanes, disabled spaces and "No Parking Zones".

Contractor Parking Permits

  • Designated parking is available to authorized contractors with proper credentials.
  • Contractor permits may be obtained by an authorized SMU organization after the Contractor Authorization Form has been submitted to the Parking and ID Card Services Office by the contractor for review.
  • Vehicles displaying contractor permits are permitted to park in designated areas referenced on the contractor permit.  Contractor parking is currently available with the proper credentials.  
  • All contractor vehicles must display contractor permits at all times while on campus.  Contractor vehicles on campus without a current contractor permit displayed are subject to citation.
  • SMU Project Mangers and Authorized Contractors can order the contractors permits on online

  

 Temporary Disabled Parking

  • Disabled spaces on campus require a SMU parking permit and a state issued disabled placard or plate or an SMU temporary handicapped permit.  
  • Individuals with short term disabled parking needs should should contact their physician for doctors note. 
  • The doctors note can be emailed to parking@smu.edu or faxed to 214-768-7678 for completion and picked up in our office 
  • A short term temporary disabled permit can be obtained from our office for a maximum of 6 weeks for on campus use only. Permit is non-renewable 
  • Drivers with longer expected recovery periods should file with the state for the state disabled permit see attached information.
