Key and SMU ID Card access to campus buildings and facilities, other than residence halls, are coordinated through the Building Access Office. The mission of the Building Access Office is to provide a secure environment on the SMU campus through the installation and service of all door hardware, the issuance of keys and the granting of access via the SMU ID card.
Building Access
Keys are issued by Building Access who then assigns the key(s) to the user who is responsible for the return of keys once they are no longer required. Each department is responsible for the inventory of keys issued to its employees.
Key Issuance
- You must submit a Key Request Form before the Building Access Office can issue a key.
- Approval from the Department Director or designated Building Manager is required.
- For a sub-master or master key requests, a Dean or Associate Vice President’s approval is required.
- Only one key will be issued for any area to a person.
- Once your key is ready for pick up, the Building Access Office will contact you to coordinate a pick-up time. Please be sure to bring your SMU ID or a valid photo form of identification in order to verify proper key distribution.
Card Access
- A Card Access Request Form must be submitted by the Department Director or designated Building Manager before the Building Access Office can grant card access.
- Once card access is granted, the Departmental Director or the designated Building Manager who made card access will be contacted.
- It is the responsibility of Departmental Director and/or the Building Manager to inform the Building Access Office when access is no longer needed.
Lock Shop
The Lock Shop is responsible for locks and hardware. The Lock Shop also oversees a record of the keys which will operate each lock on campus. Keys are supplied by the Lock Shop to the Building Access Office.
Lock Change Request
- A Work Order Request must be submitted in order to process a Lock Change Request.
- Only one key will be cut with any Lock Change Work Order Request.
- If more than one key is needed after a lock change, please submit a Key Request Form.

*** The last two items in the chart could be considered fines rather than fees but are necessary requirements falling under the “Deterrent to Waste” category of the Building Access Office's Policy and Procedures. As long as keys are returned or picked up as they should be, these fines remain a deterrent and become a non-factor.
