Sinhala is the native language of the Sinhalese people, the largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka. It is one of the official languages of that island country in the northern Indian Ocean off the southern coast of the Indian subcontinent. Separate Bible portions were printed in Sinhalese characters in Colombo between 1739 and 1780, and the first New Testament was published in 1817.  This 1870 edition, also printed in Colombo, was published by the Wesleyan Mission Press for the Colombo Auxiliary Bible Society.
