Missionaries undertook translating the Bible into Chinese as early as the seventh century CE and thirteenth-century translations have also been reported. None of these early efforts survive.  Seventeenth-century Roman Catholic missionaries also initiated translation projects, but the arrival in China of Protestant missionaries in the 1800s marks the beginning of successful Bible translation and publication in numerous dialects. This later nineteenth-century Chinese edition of the Gospel of Matthew, printed in Shanghai at the American Presbyterian Mission Press for the American Bible Society, includes parallel English translation.
