Rev. Dr. James A. Hawkins earned degrees from Lane College and Perkins School of Theology and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Texas College. A minister in the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, Hawkins served pastorates in Texas, North Carolina, and Georgia. In Tyler, Texas he served as the Dean of Students at Texas College, as president of the YMCA Board of Directors, and as board president of the Tyler Independent School District. Hawkins chaired the Joint Board of Finance in four CME regions and was elected to the Judicial Council of the CME Church in 1986. He served as president of the Judicial Council from 1998 until his death in 2003.
