Instructional Works
“There is yet room for more of the kind which preach Jesus to a child, and which simplify the great truths of Christianity to the infantile understanding.”
—David Alfred Doudney in
The Gospel Preached to Babes
A wide array of instructional works were published to complement the essential reading of the Bible and the doctrinal teachings found in catechisms. Texts included alphabet books and primers for young children, simplified stories adapted from scripture, works that encouraged a deep knowledge of the Bible, and readings for more advanced students. Extending religious education and experience outside of church services, these didactic publications were intended for use in various locations including the home, public school, or Sunday school.
