2015 DeGolyer Bookbinding Competition

Guidelines for Submission

Dates

Submissions will be accepted from July 01, 2014 to January 31, 2015.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all bookbinders who are American citizens, living either in the U.S. or abroad.

Competition book details

Bernard C. Middleton, The Restoration of Leather Bindings (Chicago: American Library Association, 1976) has 14 signatures, each containing 8 leaves, for a total of 224 pages. Measurements for the text block can be seen in the image below.

Entry Instructions

Each entry must include:

  1. Your design proposal for binding Bernard C. Middleton, The Restoration of Leather Bindings (Chicago: American Library Association, 1976).
    1. Your design proposal should be mounted on 4-ply matboard, 32 inches by 20 inches.
    2. It should depict your design for the outside (front, back, spine, and enclosure if applicable), doublures or endpaper, and any unusual structural feature. Below is an example of a submitted design proposal:

    3. Any medium may be used in making your proposal, which should be finished suitably for exhibit. Include swatches of all materials you intend to use in your final binding and match the colors as accurately as possible. All materials should be adhered to the matboard.
    4. Your depiction may be smaller than the actual book, but reduced no more than 50%.
    5. Your name should appear only on the back of the design board.
  2. Your sample binding.
    1. Your sample binding should be an example of recent work that reflects your current level of craftsmanship and techniques you have proposed in your design for The Restoration of Leather Bindings.
    2. Please send your sample binding within an enclosure such as a phase-box, slipcase, or drop-spine box.
  3. Your Career Statement/Design Intent form (click here to submit online).

Returning your entry:

  1. If you mail or ship your entry to Bridwell Library we will return it by USPS, FED EX or UPS, unless you request otherwise.
  2. If your drop off your entry at the library we will call or email you when it is ready to be picked up.
