Scholarships & Financial Aid

Big payoff

Take big steps toward a better tomorrow. With the academic resources of a nationally ranked university that attracts high-achieving students who want solid preparation for life after college, a top-tier education at SMU is a smart investment. SMU creates value through career preparation and the flexibility to pursue multiple areas of study that match your interests and strengths. We work hard to fit this valuable education into your family’s budget. Our financial aid advisors partner with you to explore scholarships, grants, loans and payment plans. That way, you can focus on what’s most important: studying what you love and preparing to leverage your skills and education for a rewarding career.

Rewarding outstanding academic achievement

SMU also offers a range of academic scholarships that reward demonstrated academic performance. Many even can be combined. Students who apply for admission by January 15 are automatically considered for SMU’s scholarships.

After you’ve been awarded any academic scholarships, your SMU financial aid advisor will review your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and College Scholarship Service (CSS) PROFILE.® All students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year to determine their eligibility for federal and state financial aid (found at www.fafsa.ed.gov). Undergraduate students who also want to be considered for university need-based aid must complete the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE® found at http://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile. There is a $25 cost for completing the CSS/PROFILE®.

Once the FAFSA and CSS/Profile have been submitted, your financial aid advisor will put together a package of federal, state and SMU-funded awards, including grants, loans and work-study options, to meet your specific situation. However, remember, you won't know what your financial options are until you apply for admission
