Meadows School of the Arts

Here, art is life

It makes perfect sense that the city that's home to the nation's largest urban arts district is also home to one of its best-known and most respected arts schools. Meadows School of the Arts at SMU brings together performers and visual artists studying side-by-side with future advertising and communications professionals, journalists and filmmakers.

Faculty members at Meadows are accomplished performers, authors and journalists themselves who possess a collective and holistic focus on the complete student experience. Graduates of Meadows include Academy Award-, Pulitzer Prize-, Emmy Award- and Tony Award-winners.

All prospective undergraduate students interested in majoring in music, dance or theatre must audition to be considered for admission to these majors. This audition process is separate from the admission requirements of the University and allows the faculty to evaluate your artistic accomplishments to date, as well as your potential for success in our programs. All auditioning candidates are also considered for artistic merit scholarship from the Meadows School. The same audition process is also required for admission to the dance minor and the music minor.

There is no separate admissions process for prospective students interested in majoring in the advertising, corporate communications and  journalism programs, but current SMU students are required to meet specific criteria when completing a set of subset courses for these majors and will be asked to complete an on-site application or portfolio review.
