The University Advising Center (UAC) is SMU's primary resource center for undergraduate pre-major advising. Embracing a student-centered, collaborative advising approach, the UAC advisors work together with SMU's pre-major students to create a comprehensive and meaningful academic plan while guiding students through the transition into a declared major.
All entering SMU students are assigned an advisor in the UAC. However, for students in the University Honors Program, and students majoring in the engineering and the fine arts (music, art, theatre, and dance), the UAC will provide specialized academic advising due mainly to the specific and rigorous academic demands of those programs. The UAC also provides students interested in the pre-health and pre-law programs with specialized pre-professional advising, which supplements the one-on-one relationship each student develops with his or her assigned advisor.

Upon matriculation, all SMU pre-major students are assigned a professional academic advisor. Each advisor is charged with providing academic guidance as students navigate the University Curriculum, acclimate to college life, explore professional option, and decide on a major. Each student is required to meet with his or her advisor every semester prior to enrollment.
