Classes and Requirements

The New Century Scholars Program eases the transition from high school to college by providing a strong academic community, conducive to building personal relationships both in and out of the classroom. New Century students have reserved spaces in several essential first-year courses at SMU, and they have the advantage of living with other students who are taking some of the same courses.

The NCSP students will benefit from a convenient in-hall classroom for some classes and the continued learning that happens in the residence hall after class has ended.  All classes in the New Century Scholars Program satisfy general education requirements for graduation, but NCSP students will be able to experience these courses with other highly motivated students.  New Century Scholars will take their freshmen writing courses (DISC 1312 and 1313) as well as their wellness class (PRW 1101) together, and because New Century students are interested in giving back to the community, their courses have a focus on social issues and personal responsibility.  An added benefit of being a New Century Scholar is the ability to enroll in DISC 1315, which falls under the honors curriculum at SMU.  New Century students are some of the only students on campus that are able to take advantage of trying out the University Honors Program before actually joining that community.  The New Century Scholars Program offers many opportunities for students to get involved at SMU and fully take advantage of the benefits of being a leader on campus.
