To enable SMU to implement the five goals and supporting objectives in this Centennial Strategic Plan, significant resource commitments will be required. Clearly, attainment of these goals will require the full, effective utilization of all members of the University community — students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Seeking to maximize the University’s academic quality and reputation will be the overriding criterion that provides the basis of allocating human, financial, and technological resources. For significant progress to be made toward these goals during this Centennial Decade, the University must increase measurably its number of both endowed chairs and professorships, particularly in Dedman College. Adding outstanding faculty will enhance the skills and workload capacity of those already on campus. Distinguished academic appointments to the faculty will have a significant influence on the quality of SMU’s undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, substantial increases in scholarship support are required if we are to be able to compete effectively with other universities for academically talented students.
